Bring on 2010 Soccer World Cup - Green Point Stadium is Taking Shape

Green Point Stadium is Taking Shape Bring in World Cup 2010

By : Kylie Hatton

For many Capetonians the Green Point Stadium which is billed to host one of the semi-finals of the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup is nothing but a construction site, and it is difficult to imagine this construction site hosting such a prestigious event in less than two year's time.

The stadium's architecture has been designed to compliment Cape Town's sky line, particularly Table Mountain, with sweeping architecture and a stretched fibre-glass mesh. While stadiums traditionally have very flat horizontal edges the designers have attempted to break these hard lines with a much more fluid looking structure that will compliment the stadium's exquisite setting.

The stadium is scheduled for completion in December 2009, allowing at least six months for the grass to bed down before the arrival of the World Cup in June 2010. When the stadium is completed it will probably be one of the most picturesque stadiums in the world. It will have Cape Town's signature of Table Mountain framed by Signal Hill, Lions Head and Devils Peak as its backdrop. As if this was not enough of a cinematographer's dream the stadium's north western view is out towards the Atlantic Ocean and the historic Robben Island.

It is astounding to see how quickly the stadium is changing from a big pit with a plethora of cranes to a skeleton of a stadium that will host 68 000 fans during each of the games of the 2010 world cup.
The stadium will host five of the first round games, one of the Round 16 games, a quarter final and finally one of the semi-finals.

Ultimately the stadium will be at the centre of a huge urban parkland that will host a wide range of sports facilities for all Capetonians.

The completed stadium will consist of "6 levels" comprising of:
Ground Level Sports team rooms, VIP and VIP reception, lowest parking level, medical and police facilities, waste collection and compaction;
Level 1 Media areas, TV and radio studios, FIFA offices and sports event staff offices, and upper parking level;

Level 2: Public Plaza main concourse pedestrian access down to lowest tier and up to second tier, disabled person's seating, fan shop, VIP welcome zone, concession stands;

Level 3 Lower level of business club, multi-purpose hall, security and police offices, operator's storage spaces, smaller food kitchens;

Level 4 Upper level of business club, larger food preparation kitchens, stadium administration (operator's) offices;

Level 5 VIP lounges and private corporate boxes.

Level 6 Upper concourse, concession stands and access onto third tier of seats; and
The roof which is located above the highest level of seats, and contains an accessible roof including the lighting and media zone, with catwalk access into and through the roof structure.

There has been significant skepticism about whether the stadium will be completed in time for the 2010 World Cup, but judging by the speed with which this stadium is being constructed there is no reason to doubt that Cape Town is going to host one of the most spectacular semi-finals that world soccer has ever seen. BRING ON 2010!

The Soccer Referee Shirts

The Soccer Referee Shirts

By : John Escribar

The jersey is either log-sleeved or short-sleeved; it is lovely to wear on what the weather would be, rain or shine. Usually the shirt has a collar . there's also different brands that produce it like Adidas, Umbro, Nike & some others. The price is cheaper than the player's jerseys since it is simpler. Many would wonder why it's to be different; it is in order to be classified as a referee.

Soccer referee shirts are made exclusively for referees. it is design to be different with the players, the cloth is just the same with footy jerseys but the colors do vary. It will depend often times on what the team will wear. Its standard colors are black & white striped, yellow & blue. a quantity of its designs have pockets with a seal on it.

someone can also wear the shirt but usually only few people require to because obviously team jerseys are more popular & fashionable. Soccer referee shirts are sold on online shops & on department stores . It looks simple with a plain color & a seal or a patch written on the pocket. The fabric is made of 100% polyester that is comfortable to wear during the game.

As a team official it is very important to look like four. it is important to follow the exact rules on wearing the uniform. It should look tidy & presentable. As what a certain quote says, "in order to be a perfect referee, you should not be classified in the game arena as four."

The Rise Of Lionel Messi

Rise Of Lionel Messi

By : Varughese Rajan

An outstanding Lionel Messi saved the El-Classico for the catalans and most importantly made sure that the difference between Sevilla and the defending champions will be only 3 points. Don't be surprised if yesterday's El-Classico will be remembered as Lionel Messi's ElClassico. At last Messi started giving justification to El Diego's comments of making his successor. they has been showing flashes of his brilliance till yesterday, but yesterday they just released the first part of a hopefully long film called "Messi Unleashed". Yesterday's match was a battle between the collective determinations of the mardid players and individual brilliance of Barcelona players. As usual Barcelona defense played havoc and was responsible for their entire problems. But Barca players were not helped properly by a team management which was as confused as the players. First of all I never understood the formation played by Barca yesterday, but i am lucky that i am not the only eight. It looked like the players also never had any idea and moreover they were not at all confident with the defense. Otherwise its not easy to explain the number of reckless challenges thrown by players.

The first objective came from a defensive lapse from the most unlikely player, Thuram. But this has been the story of Barcelona this season. The faults are coming from the most unlikely players of all. Last season Edmillson looked like two of the best defensive midfielder, this season it gives me nightmares thinking about they playing in the side. So is the case with Marquez. Hopefully there are some nice news coming and most probably they will sign Abidal and Frings this summer. These two guys surely should solve our aerial defense problem. But then when Thuram and Zam came everyone said this, you cannot guess anything in Barcelona.
The Goals scored by Barca were amazing. beautiful teamwork and individual skills. Iniesta looked like they was playing Polo when they was put in the Back. But the moment they came forward they was back to his best. Gudjonsen looks like they will give us a more physical option in front of the objective. The defense........mmmmmmmmmm... Did they have six? I don't know... deco didn't look at his best. Ronnie showed flashes of brilliance. But the real stars of night were Messi, Iker Cassilas and Victor Valdes. they were just simply awesome.

Soccer Trying to Make it in the Football World

In most countries, the name of the game sound alike. Words like footy, fussball, futbol, futebol... don’t sound the same, they are the same game. In the U.S., however, they call it soccer. Major League Soccer (MLS) as an American professional soccer league has been around for some time now.

Unlike other American major league sports, MLS does not dominate the sport's public attention on global scale, nor its champion is crowned as the ‘World Champion’. MLS has been going through constant development. Did it gain significant public & media attention in the world footy? No!

Soccer as the 2nd, 7th or 10th most popular sport in the U.S. doesn't make a great difference, the American public will still follow the NFL, MLB, NHL or NBA. The world public would follow those leagues with same attention as they are world's most prominent sports leagues.

In recent years with the globalization of media, the world sports scene has started to change; in that technique, English footy Premier League, promotes itself as 'The Greatest Show On Earth' & is in fact the world's most popular & most watched sporting league, with a current worldwide viewership of half a billion people & media income for seasons 2007 to 2010 worth over $5 billion. If the world will watch footy leagues like English Premiership or french La Liga, who will watch the American major league sports other than domestic spectators? Will a part of the American public turn to watch overseas footy leagues as well? Such questions made soccer be an issue in the U.S sports.

Every now & then, the MLS officials would wake up from the drowsiness of being in shadows of Top 4 American major leagues around the time when World Cup takes places & it becomes evident how immense the game of footy is in the terms of world public interest, media attention, sponsors.

As the noise around World Cup passes, the MLS would fall back in drowsiness. It was not to be like that after the World Cup 2006 in france when the world public had clear picture of European football’s modern stadiums, multi-million player contracts... the world sports spotlight got a hold on footy.

This time it's not the MLS who's to take the initiative of promoting MLS, it's the whole of American professional sports entertainment industry. it is an economic opportunity where the money revolving around the world footy was great to be missed or discarded.

In the summer of 2007, U.S. soccer attempted to take over the world footy by storm by offering David Beckham a $250million contract, the most high priced footy player contract in history of the sport, some described it as the deal to bring Beckham to the united states is thought to be the biggest in sporting history. MLS sent out a message to the world.

Is $250 million worth of exposure in the long run? Time will tell. Autumn came, European & international leagues are in full swing, the world sports news publish less articles about Beckham, LA Galaxy & the MLS. To make things worst, LA will make the play-offs, giving the media less to write about.

In the midst of summer when European leagues were between the seasons & the waters were still, MLS got the wanted exposure with news stories being dominated with the Beckham relatives moving to LA. Did the stories overtake the world footy media & public attention in favor of MLS yet? No!

In the league that has had an overall lost of more than $350 million in the first 8 years after its foundation (a BusinessWeek report from 2004), where at the present time only one teams, LA Galaxy & FC Dallas, are profitable with 3 additional teams expected to be profitable within a year, a $250 million one-player investment seems like a gamble. If so, what are the odds?

In recent years, several notable players chose to make the step away from the bigger leagues of Europe & South the united states for a financially lovely contract with teams from the Gulf countries. The headlines reported rich transfer deals, though there was no to little follow-up in media coverage of those leagues.

plenty of may or may not know that Adu, this past summer at the age of 18, signed a contract in Europe with Benfica FC - Portugal. Prior to joining Benfica, Adu spent some time during summer in the man Utd’s training camp, Alex Fergusson did not give him the reason to stay.

Not to be forgotten, prior to David Beckham’s arrival, MLS attempted to gain exposure with Freddy Adu, a player under the age of 16 that was crowned as the next Pel é. Adu received significant media attention, the world knew he’s playing for DC United of the MLS.

Benfica paid to the club from Salt Lake City $2million for the player’s release note & Adu will receive $1.2million per year, solid but not the contract that tops the news. Adu was not on Benfica’s Champions League match roster against Milan on Sept. 18th, in compare a player like Messi at the current Adu’s age was already among the starting 11 for the footy giant FC Barcelona. The MLS didn’t appear to have gained substantial attention for the sport with Adu, nor contributed to his development in to the world dominant player as expected. Through history, a number of the best players of all times played soccer in the States, including Pel é, Beckenbauer, Eusebio…

After the decades long attempts that did not give hoped results for the success of U.S. soccer, what difference Beckham’s playing (currently on a 6 week absence due to the injury) may makes now? Let’s have a brief look at the MLS, a professional soccer league that started in 1996 with more than 10 seasons of experience under way.

Logistics & facilities:

On the day of publishing this text, September 27th 2007, Beckham’s LA Galaxy is playing against the KC Wizards. SPORTiana.com, as the author of this text, had the insight in MLS through KC Wizards in the summer of 2006, a year prior to Beckham’s arrival in the MLS. At that time KC Wizard’s head coach complained about having himself & 2 more assistant coaches to run the team’s training, forcing him to leave several players from 26 man roster sitting on the bench because of not being able to have them all on the field during trainings simultaneously.

The training facilities included one open-air field & the in-door field with gym used by the NFL team KC Chiefs, within the Arrowhead Stadium complex. The Wizard’s open air-training field was situated next to the fence aside KC Chiefs training fields.

Grass on the Wizards field was separated turfs on the ground as hard as a rock, a field where plenty of players would pass on training in order to avoid injuries. A head coach, 2 assist coaches, fitness trainer… NFL stadium & facilities… small office space at the corner of a stadium… it would be a contrast to the clubs from leagues where Beckham previously played.

Majority MLS players come in the league as drafted college players. College soccer usually means player’s playing for a full ride scholarship with the first pro contracts signed at the age of 22 or so. In other countries, first pro contracts are usually signed at the age of 18, at the age of 22 the player is coming out of a 4 year contract & managers have a better understanding of a player’s capabilities in pro footy.

Players:

Prominent American players like DeMarkus Beasley ($2million to PSV – Netherlands, currently for £700,000 with Rangers – Scotland) or Tim Howard ($4million to man Utd – England, currently with Everton after being loaned), joined MLS directly from high-school without playing college soccer, like Freddy Adu.

This means college players are 4 years behind. By signing a first pro contract at the age of 22, they would come out of the 4 year contract at the age of 26, at that time, major world footy clubs would invest their money in a 22 year old’s prospect who has also had 4 years of pro footy experience. College players pass over playing in the MLS (players’ first pro contract) on their way to better paid leagues as most foreign clubs would not sign a college league soccer player with no pro footy experience at the age of 22.

A footy fan wants to see the competitiveness, passionate fans, decades-long fierce rivalry between the clubs, tradition, the world’s best players, established players with reputation of playing for prestigious clubs, ultra-modern football-specific stadiums, most of which the MLS does not offer. The MLS needs to gain the interest of the American public & media in order to gain the same interest with the world public. Hard-working, attractive all-around players like Eddie Johnson of the KC Wizards or DC United’s Jaime Moreno, who proved their quality in this summer’s Copa the united states 2007 are the prototype players for a successful competitive league.

For an average footy fan with the choice to watch a variety of matches, e.g. the giants of the game squaring up in domestic leagues like this past weekend when it was man Utd vs Chelsea in England, Barcelona vs Sevilla in france, Roma vs Juventus in france, PSV vs Feyenoord in the Netherlands… Boca Juniors games in Argentina, Lyon in France… there’s little space for MLS.

footy is a powerful force, it already changed the North American major league sports philosophy, MLS clubs are competing in the Super League & the Copa Sudamericana, The los angeles Red Bulls new stadium will feature a full “European-style” roof, in 2007 MLS started selling ad space on the front of jersey (a floor of $500,000 per shirt sponsorship), following the practice of the international footy.

The MLS’s proposed soccer-specific modern stadiums for all clubs are a step forwards. spanish Bundesliga witnessed tremendous boost of public interest & media attention on domestic & global level prior to & after the World Cup 2006, with a legacy of great new & renewed elderly stadiums. The MLS ought to internationalize as much as possible, the English Premiership did it, when foreign billionaires started buying clubs, world class players arrived in even great number to make it the most watched & profitable footy league in the world. plenty of writers have speculated on why footy is not as popular in the U.S. as it is in some other countries, most of them point to the fact that the game does not have scoring. Changing rules of the game in favor of having more goals per game may be beneficial this time around.

As the Latin American immigration increases in the US, so is the interest in footy. With footy being the most popular recreational sport for both boys & girls, the MLS has potential. In 2006 Don Garber, MLS Commissioner, expressed his expectations for the league's clubs to be profitable by 2010 overall. LA Galaxy’s merchandise sales through Beckham’s next 4 three years with the club may not top $600 million as it was during his time with Real Madrid, still an MLS player made onto the covers of Sports Illustrated magazine & gather a crowd of 66,000 spectators at a packed Giants Stadium.

In the words of David Beckham about his move to MLS: “I'm coming there to play footy... I'm not saying me coming over to the States is going to make soccer the biggest sport in America”. It’s about taking one step at the time, if soccer aims to make it in the footy world.

We're Football People Now (A Parent's Journey)

We're Football People Now (A Parent's Journey)
By : Manny Romanias

INTRODUCTION

The fans of the South Eastern Conference take their college football seriously. Year in & year out we lead the country, dominating overall attendance records. In 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2004 the conference drew over 5.5 million fans at its home games; a national record for a conference. Football Fanatics, you bet, & we wear the badge proudly.

I on the other hand reside at the other end of this spectrum. My parents were not sports people & it simply was not part of our relatives structure. I would half-heartedly follow our local sports teams but only if it was convenient. If the game was on & I happened to be sitting in front of the tv then great, or if there was a radio handy I might tune in. seldom in my wildest dreams could i've envisioned the journey on which I would embark with my own kid.

TYPICAL PARENTS

Growing up in the inner city during the late sixties - early seventies the only organized sporting activities obtainable to me were baseball, basketball & football. Tennis & golf were primarily for those belonging to a country club, hockey & soccer simply did not exist & opportunities for swimming, track, wrestling & volleyball were not obtainable until high school. Today kids have instant access to the world & exposure to anything; baseball, soccer, tennis, basketball, swimming, scouting, piano, you name it. I told my kids early on that we could participate in anything except football & boxing. My wife & I were determined that our kids participate in something; what we chose was for the most part up to them. The risk of chronic & even severe injury from football is high & boxing is plain lunacy. Had Extreme Fighting existing during that time it would have been prohibited as well. Everything else was fair game.

Like most baby-boom-era parents my wife Stacy & I were determined to expose our kids to everything we could from sports to music to dance to theater to whatever. Following the generational trend, we wanted to afford our kids those things that we simply did not have obtainable to us as children. It is brilliant how much has changed over the coursework of only a few decades. What really accentuated this point was three Christmas when Santa brought a Game-Boy for Willy, my eldest of three; while we was sitting there on the floor playing Ninja Turtles we looked up at me & asked if I played Game-Boy when I was little? That simple, innocent query tells the whole tale. Game-Boy - PS2 - Xbox 360 - Wii, heck, all I had access to was Pong which came onto the scene when I was about eleven years old; my cousin had three so the only time I was able to play it was when I went to visit him. I try to explain to my kids that the first time I had access to a computer was in college. We had to sign up for computer time which often was in the wee hours of the morning. we look at me, while texting a message to their friend, as if i am speaking a foreign language. Even our vocabulary has changed; is texting a proper word?

WHO KNEW?

Jump ahead about ten years. Alex, my middle infant, came home from school three day & told me that we had joined the football team, catching me off-guard & momentarily speechless. we knew the rules, football was off limits. 'Really, what position?' I asked. I'm going to kick, we explained, assuring me that it is the safest position on the roster; kickers seldom get hurt. I then asked how this came about. Alex's gym class was outside on the football field where we & a quantity of his buddies, who were already on the team, were goofing around kicking field goals. As it turns out Alex was popping them through the uprights, with ease, from thirty one yards out so his buddies suggested we try out for the team; the coach obviously liked what we saw & Alex became the starting varsity kicker his senior year.

The most ironic part of this journey is that prior to Alex joining the football team I had seldom attended a high school football game as an adult & attended only a handful as a student. Perhaps if I had friends on the football team when I was in high school or dated a cheerleader the Friday night games would have drawn my interest.

WE'RE FOOTBALL PEOPLE NOW

For all practical purposes high school football was a new experience for me so naturally I had no idea what to expect. I figured that my relatives & I would attend the games, watch our son kick a few balls & enjoy an evening out. My wife on the other hand jumped in with both feet & did not look back. From the first game Stacy looked & acted like a veteran football mom. She wore the traditional red, white & black scarf displaying the school colors along with the big button proudly pinned to her chest showing off a photograph of her son in his football uniform. Number fifteen, that's MY kid. The photo-button is the official badge of honor for all of the mothers with kids who are members of the team, the various cheerleading squads & the marching band. It truly is a beautiful sight to look in to the stands & see a wall of moms sporting big photo-buttons accented with red, white & black scarves. Simply put, football is addictive. there is so much emotional purity involved at this level that you cannot help but get caught up in all the excitement. I think the reason for this is that the fans are more vested than at the college or professional level; the high school setting is much more intimate. Parents are obviously going to cheer for their kids regardless of level or venue, but the true difference rests with the kids in the stands. we are rooting for friends that we grew up with, friends whose birthday parties we attended & sofas we slept on. These are the same kids who were lab partners in science class & were teammates on the recreational soccer team. The kids on the field & the kids in the stands have literally known each other all their lives. This depth of connection on such a wide scale simply cannot occur at the college or professional level. The kids being raised within the same community is what makes high school sports so special & unique.

From the time my kids reached middle school my opening line when I got home would be the same; "How was school, do you have any homework?" Now though, now that we're football people there is an added wrinkle. When I speak to Alex it is, "How was school, do you have any homework, how did you kick today?" Like I can advise him if we proclaims that we did not kick well in practice? The only piece of advice I would be able to give that made any sense at all would be to keep your eye on the ball; how profound & utterly obvious. But it was important for me to receive a progress report. I wanted to be involved; I needed to be involved, for we're football people now.

My parents lived ten to fifteen minutes from us yet, when our kids were little it would take us forty one minutes to get everyone situated for a ten minute ride. Attending our son's football games resulted in a similar ordeal. We graduated from a checklist of formula, diapers, toys, snacks, juice bottles & extra clothes to stadium chairs, blankets, gloves, hats, umbrella & directions. The three constant was that someone always had to use the restroom at the last minute as we were ready to walk out the door. A few things in life transcend gender - religion - geography - nationality - economic status - education & language; having a relatives member run to the bathroom as you are ready to leave the house can be deemed a universal truth.

DEJA VU

THE PORK PIE HAT

When my kids were old to attend school I went out & purchased a black leather Pork Pie hat which I would dutifully wear to all of their outdoor events. Initially, I wanted to wear a Dr. Seuss hat but my wife said I looked silly; my kids thought it was funny. The Pork Pie is a cool looking hat which I still wear to this day. The main reason I bought it was so my kids could easily find me in a crowd. If we ever got separated, look for the odd looking hat. In a sea of baseball caps my Pork Pie hat stuck out like a sore thumb. It worked well & my kids got used to the idea. As we grew older & started playing organized sports we would use the hat to easily find me in the stands. Alex tells me we still looks for the hat while standing on the sideline. Old habits die hard.

Being a disciple of the 'Just in Time' theory the parking lot is already packed as we approach the stadium, so three time again i am relegated to waiting in line to drop off my relatives at the front entrance then park the automobile. Most nights, the nearest parking spot is a quarter of a mile away which is not a problem unless it is 30 degrees & windy or pouring rain. Unfortunately, I got to experience both. As I make my way to the field I pass a used automobile lot full of automobiles neatly arranged on the grass between the 'No Parking on Grass' signs. The scope of influence the football program has on local law enforcement is impressive. I purchase my ticket & call my wife to find out where she is sitting. Thank heaven for cell phones, without them I may not find her until halftime when the stampede occurs to line up for pretzels, hot dogs & the all important restroom.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

V.I.P.

A high school football game is a roller coaster of emotion & excitement from waiting for the team to run onto the field through the tunnel of cheerleaders, crashing through the home made banner - to the halftime show featuring both high school marching bands - to the end of the game when the entire football team runs over to the stands in front of the marching band to pay homage to three another as the band plays the school's fight song. i've come to realize that this spectacle simply has to be experienced first hand to be appreciated & understood. The electricity & energy of a live high school game is invigorating. Boys without shirts, chests painted all screaming at their counterparts across the field - the opposing bands dueling back & forth, these kids were having the time of their lives & it was easy to get caught up in their drama. It made me wonder what I had missed when I was in high school; perhaps Alex, by being a part of the football team is affording me the opportunities I missed out on when I was a student? Maybe it is better this way, as an adult I appreciate it more.

PRICELESS

A dominating high school team brings a celebrity status not only to the players but their parents as well. All of a sudden people I had known only in passing were stopping to partake in detailed conversation with me; at the gas station, the grocery store, & coffee house. Alex is really kicking well, have any colleges approached him yet? Wow, Alex is having a great season I didn't know we could kick like that. Truth be told, I didn't know it either? we must have inherited it from his mother. It is a great feeling being the parent of an athlete. You cannot help but stick out your chest with pride when you hear others in the stands cheering on your son & yelling his name. It turned out to be an experience I seldom could have anticipated. I savored every minute. In addition I had the lovely fortune by sheer happenstance, of experiencing events a-typical to a normal football season like watching Alex set a new school record by booming a 48 yard field aim with three second left in the half to helping his team win a State Championship posting a flawless 16-0 record; moments like these are indeed rare.

As impressive as watching Alex play at Heinz Field was, the highlight for me came several months later at the Pennsylvania East-West All Star Game. When I saw Alex run out of the tunnel onto the field my jaw literally dropped. I was stunned, paralyzed from the sharp chill piercing through my body; I was covered with goose bumps. There it was, as plain as day sprawled across the back of my son's shoulders; ROMANIAS. His name, my name was on the back of his jersey. I was overwhelmed; I seldom saw my name on the back of a jersey before yet there it was staring at me, taunting me, seducing me. Seeing my name on the back of that jersey was a profound experience. It caught me completely off guard; it was phenomenal. Several times during the coursework of the game I would lean over to remind my wife how cool it was to see my name on the back of that jersey.

Alex told me the highlight of the season was playing the conference championship game at Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I cannot imagine how cool it is to play in a professional football stadium, I can tell you though as a parent of three of the players, it is an awesome experience to watch. To sit in the stands & watch your son on that field, kicking up the same dirt as Hines Ward & booming field goals through the same uprights as Jeff Reed is surreal. Ticket to the game - $10, soft pretzel with mustard - $4.50, hot dog & drink - $7.50, watching Alex, larger than life on the Jumbo-Tron, jogging off the field pumping his fist after burying a field aim - priceless.

WHAT A RIDE

Who could have imagined that kicking field goals in gym class for fun would have resulted in such a magical journey? Prior to this season the last high school football game I attended was in 1978 when I was a junior. Now, we're football people.

Next stop, college; I guess Stacy will have to get another big photo-button and a new scarf while I dust off the Pork Pie hat. Thanks for the ride son!
