Who Were the Greatest Domestic Football Team of the Last Decade?
By David J P SmithThere's been lots of great European domestic footy teams throughout the last decade, but which is the best? To find out which, I would must think about the feats of each team, as well as the quality of the players & the moments of magic they produced. I have picked out 4 of the best for consideration:
- Real Madrid's team from 2002-2004
- Arsenal's 'Invincibles' from 2003-2004
- Barcelona's perfect 2008-2009 treble winning season
- Jose Mourinho's Chelsea from 2004-2006
Of these 4 teams, for me there's clearly 2 that stick out & that are a cut above the rest. First of all there is the 'Invincible' Arsenal from 2003, who managed to go a whole season in the league undefeated (which was the first time anyone's done that since 1883). While this is an incredible achievement in itself, it was more the style & the manner by which Arsenal won the title that year. They had several players of exceptional class (such as Bergkamp, Henry, Vieira & Pires) that were absolutely scintillating on their day.

Secondly, there is the Barcelona team from last season (2008-2009). To put things in point of view, this team were the first ever Italian side to win the treble (including the league title, the Italian cup & the European Champion's League). That in itself would have been , but the Catalan side also produced a number of the finest & most unbelievable footy ever witnesses by man. It is also incredible to think that this was Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola's first season ever in charge of a team, so for me, Barcelona takes the price of greatest ever.
